Sentoki

EDIT: if you plan on making a sentoki, make sure the weapon you give them can be used in some sort of chore, as they always double as a tool.

species: sentōki (sen-toe-key)

planet: sand star

physical appearence: sentoki are generally short creatures, an adult shorter than the average cappy, and a child nearly as small as a puffball. they have skin tones ranging from a light tan to a chocolate brown and, in some rare cases, a tawny yellow. their hair color matches their skin, albeit sometimes in darker shades. their eyes are brightly colored, and are slit like a cats. some sentoki dye the ends of their hair to match their eyes, but most choose black instead. their eyes are large and square-ish as children, eventually thinning to an almond shape or a sharp angle as they age. they have large, sharp canines, four fingers and partly retractable claws.

attire: all sentoki wear clothes that match their eye color, ranging in different shades for each different article of clothing. vests, shawls, shirts, overalls, and belts are worn by both adult genders. young girls usually wear short, sleeveless dresses or long shirts, and young boys wear vests or just a pair of pants. bracelets, ponytails, bandanas, and sweatbands are worn by all ages. jewlery and makeup are rare, but not unheard of.

abilities: all sentoki are born with an inate ability to use a certain type of tool that can be used in everyday life, and double as a weapon. kitchen knives, hatchets, rakes, hoes, sycthes, hammers, weighted nets, and even shovels are all wielded with uncanny skill and power. but what makes the sentoki so infamous is their dreaded "battle rage," or "flare." when danger looms or the sentoki is simply angry, their eyes will go harshly bloodshot and their pupils dilate to black slivers. claws emerge, teeth are bared, and the rager in question becomes bloodthirsty and demon-like. physical strength, hearing, and sight are all increased during a flare. this drastic personality change is shocking to both outsiders and sentoki alike, and most greatly dislike the loss of control. some are born with very weak flares, and have greater control over themselves, although they do not have nearly as much strength. then there are those who have very powerful battle rages, and can slip into one uncontrollably, snarling like a wild beast. no one is sure what causes the battle rage, but it is theorized that a massive flood of adreneline causes the clouded mind and burst of strength, and increased flow of blood causes the red eyes.

history: there are few written records of the sentokis' past, as they have only just started using paper. they do know, from old tales passed down through generations, that their ancestors once dwelled in the desert. when they found a small oasis in the middle of the desert, they started a small village, and started expanding the oasis into a larger plot of land. memories of cruel famines and harsh droughts haunt the community, and thus they are always working to keep the oasis alive.

interactions with others: the sentoki have little to no technology, and anyone trying to land on sand star are caught in the harsh winds just below the atmosphere. they are blown into the desert, and are never seen again. small groups of sentoki will try to find the crashed ship and bring back whatever they can salvage to the community. few aliens have managed to make their way into the oasis, and those few were given supplies and help for repairing its ship, so that they may be off of the planet and away from the safe oasis as fast as possible. some sentoki have left with those few aliens, trying to find more than constant work. those few deserters are never spoken of again, although they are rumored to be thriving.

tools: when a child turns 5 years old, they are taken to the forges to make their birth weapon. it is here, in the fiery embers, that the weapon is determined, and after careful guidence from the blacksmiths, the child takes its first steps towards coming of age. the weapon and the wielder will have a special bond, and no other works feels better in the sentoki's hand. depending on what the weapon is, the child immediatly begins learning how to use it to help the community. rakes, hoes, shovels, and scythes go to the fields to farm, axes and saws go to the forest to harvest wood, knives go to the kitchens, etc.

working: sentokis work all their lives, always trying to pull though another year. they see their little oasis in the massive desert as a gift, one that can crumble at the wrong touch. they work all day, everyday. the very young or the elderly help with cooking, or keeping the oasis clean and pristine.

community: there is no true goverment on sand star, and sentokis consider keeping their family well fed the highest priority. unless they have a surplus of food or supplies, each family will not be overly concerned with another's suffering. all families, however, participate in keeping the main fields healthy, and the harvest is equally shared. but if one family is larger than another and cannot survive on their share, then they must work extra and/or create their own little gardens on their small property. when a sentoki plans on marriage, they always do it with a different family, with the bride or groom coming to live with the others family, or starting a new one altogether.

legends: the sentoki are the last known species that still believe in the two banished gods, zero and zero2 (in my fanfic they are seperate entities, deal with it.). they belive that if they are wasteful or cause destruction, then they will attract the attention and hate of the gods. they fear invasion of dark matter above all else, and are trained from birth to always be on the lookout.

justice system: as there is no real government, when a decision concerning the entire community must be made, all of the families come together to vote on decisions. petty theft doesnt have a major punishment, and the thieves are usually forced to patrol the borders of the oasis (a dreadfully boring and uncomfortable job, due the scorching desert) for a few days. however, stealing food or water is greatly frowned upon, and considered very dishonorable to the thief's family. sentokis who steal food are forced to travel into the desert for one full day, and if they return, then they are allowed back into the community. killing is very rare, and is usually caused when a battle rage breaks out on accident. there is no punishment for killing, but the sentoki who lost control will always feel the shame, and some punish themselves. the greatest crime is damaging the crops or land, as this affects everyone who lives in the oasis. anyone caught destroying property or food is banished into the desert, or is executed.

burial: when a sentoki dies, they are buried on the very edge of the oasis, and a tree is planted over their body. these trees are considered sacred, and serve as a tombstone. flowers are planted around the grave, and ribbons, which are the same color as the deceased's eyes, are tied to the tree trunk.

dark-cutter steel: the sentokis' greatest secret is the fabled metal, dark-cutter steel. incredibly, when forged under the right circumstances, it will pass through rock, flesh, armor, etc. the only thing that it does cut is dark matter, and it is the ultimate weapon against this feared foe. you could relentlessly attack a possesed body, and hurt only the dark matter within. however, the steel is completely useless for anything else, and is also rather brittle. to remedy this problem, only a little bit is mixed into each weapon, along with regular steel. the result is a tool that can still do its job, be it in farming or during battle, but the sentoki who forged it is able to make it pass through flesh and slice dark matter at will. its ability to pass through metal or rock is lost, however.


current status: nobody knows what has happened to the sentoki. already a species that hardly anyone knew about, they have seemingly disappeared from the universe altogether. even the planet has vanished. although, it has been said, that on the last night that the planet was seen, black clouds obscured the stars in that corner of the galaxy...
